John "Milas" Parker

John Milas Parker's death certificate states his name as John Milas Parker. His father is recorded as Thomas Parker, and his mother's name as Rebecca M. Brown. John Milas Parker's birth and death dates are recorded as:

                  John Milas Parker
                  Birth: 28 SEP 1887 Jackson Co., N.C.
                  Death: 21 AUG 1965 Jackson Co., N.C.

My father is Fred Carl Parker Sr. and his grandfather is John Milas Parker. In conversations with my father he states that John Milas Parker would take him to the cemetery where Robert L. Parker was laid to rest, The Balsam Grove Baptist Cemetery, Caney Fork, Jackson Co., N.C. John Milas Parker referred to Robert L. Parker as his father.
They visited Robert Parker's burial site often. We retain photos of the burial site with "head marker."

For one year during the Second War, John Milas Parker and Charlotte Rebecca Aiken Parker resided in Walla Walla, Washington. He stated that they relocated for the lumber business and then a year later returned to Sylva and purchased 6 acres of land off Old Cope Creek Rd, Sylva, N.C. They bequeathed some of the acreage to the late Verlon Parker.
John Milas Parker commented how he married a lady four years his senior, referring to his wife, Charlotte R. Aiken. Charlotte was born 1883. This would reinforce the validity of the dates on the death certificate, and 1920 and 1930 Jackson County, N.C., census records. John Milas Parker and Charlotte Rebecca Aiken lived on Sugar Creek Road in the 1920 census - Sugar Creek Road is at the head of Caney Fork. They were in Sylva in 1930 census. Furthermore, these census records reflect John Milas Parker as being born in 1887.

Both 1920 and 1930 Jackson Co. census records reflect John Milas as four years younger than Charlotte R. Aiken, born on 11 DEC 1883. These census reports reflect John Milas Parker born 1887, the exact date on his death certificate. In other words, the census records of 1920 and 1930 declare John Milas Parker to be born in 1887, and Charlotte R. Aiken Parker born in 1883.

The name Milas A. or Milas Arlander is on some earlier census reports with 1873 and 1878 as birth. In the area, there appears to be three males with the name Milas or Milus.
Thomas Parker is recorded as father on the death certificate of John Milas Parker.

Another reason for the confusion is John Milas was only 4 years old when his father Robert died.

More about John "Milas" Parker

Some believe that Perry D. Parker is the father of John Milas Parker. However, Perry D. "Bod" Parker passed away ABT. 1879. If John Milas Parker was born according to his death certificate and some census records, then Perry D. Parker died 8 years before John Milas Parker was born.

Also, Perry "Bod" Parker died about 12 years before Robert L. Parker died, so he can be eliminated as the father of John Milas.
However, Perry and Robert married two Brown sisters. Their father's name is David Milas Brown. It appears Perry and Mary had a son named Milas, and Robert and Rebecca also had a son named John Milas.
Since the Brown sisters' father's name is David Milas Brown, they honored their father by naming a son, Milas.

John Milas Parker's mother is Rebecca M. Brown (Brown, Rebecca M.). Rebecca M. Brown's sister is Mary Alice Brown (Brown, Mary Alice). Mary Alice Brown married Perry D. Parker (Parker, Perry D.), the brother of Robert L. Parker. Mary Alice Brown married Perry D. Parker on 11 NOV 1875.

The children of Perry D. Parker and Mary Alice Brown, and the children of Rebecca M. Brown and Robert L. Parker, are double first cousins.

Parker Researcher, Naomi Hooper Green, says, "His birth record says Robert, but his death says Thomas is the father. I would tend to go with the birth record, because when they filed a delayed birth record they had to provide either 2 or 3 affidavits of some sort. The death record information was provided by the "informant", usually a spouse or child, so memory could be wrong there."

Ms. Green further states, "In checking Robert L. Parker's census tracking sheet, I have come to the conclusion that John Milas Parker was their son and probably a legitimate one...
I have done some more research since I sent you the packet and I feel there are definitely three Milas Parkers.  I will list them and see if you guys agree.
One is Alfred MILAS Parker born 13 Sep 1873, son of Jeremiah M. "Jerry" Parker and Mary Caroline Brown. This Milas married Flora H. Coward on 29 Dec 1907, and I have 4 children for them. He died 2 Jan 1946, and is buried in the Lower Coward Cemetery. Here is his census tracking sheet information."

She lived next door to her parents in 1930 census.

I say you can eliminate either of these as your Milas Parker. As for your Milas being the son of Thomas Parker (Dan, you had him Thomas Brown) and Rebecca Brown or the son of Robert L. Parker and Rebecca Brown, I have come to the conclusion that will take a stroke of luck to find out as to which man is his father.  It appears that Rebecca Brown was definitely his mother.

Since he married in December 1905, I don't have the marriage record to see if his age was listed when he married. His delayed birth record has him J. Milas Parker born 28 Sep 1887, Cowarts, son of Robert Parker born 1856 and Rebecca Brown born 1857.

His death record lists him born 28 Sep 1887, NC, died 21 Aug 1965, Jackson Co., NC, son of Thomas Parker and Rebecca Brown, wife, Charlotte Aiken Parker. He was buried 23 Aug 1965, Balsam Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Harold Cook of Sylva, NC was the informant.

Since both his birth and death record list him born Sep 1887, then he would appear in the 1900 census for the first time as the 1890 census burned.  If this birth year is correct (must be), then he had his 18th birthday in Sep before he married in 1905.  There is one other Milas Parker in 1900 census and I would say that it is probably he, even though the age is wrong.  Here is that "census tracking sheet" which I think is his for 1900.

JOHNNY MILAS PARKER -

1880 (See his age in 1920 and 1930, making him born about 1888, so he would not appear in the 1880 census.)

(Garland Wood also living there) (Garlan Wood was a witness at the wedding of Milas & Charlotte)

(See age in 1920 and 1930 census; he probably lied to get a job in 1900.)

I did not find him in 1910 census. I tried my on-line subscription to the census. I also checked the Caney Fork Township line by line for him without luck.

1920 Jackson Co., NC -- Sugar Creek Road, Caney Fork - 103/118 - Taken 13 Jan 1920

In 1920, he lived next door to Perry L. & Rebecca C. Parker, and Perry R. & Ada Aikens. Perry Parker lived next to John & Nancy J. Aikens.

1930 Jackson Co., NC - Sylva - 61/61

PARKER, John M., 41, married at age 19, b. NC, both parents b. NC

You might try the Jackson County Bastardy bonds to see if there is a case for Thomas Parker, Robert Parker or Rebecca Brown. His birth record says Robert, but his death says Thomas is the father. I would tend to go with the birth record, because when they filed a delayed birth record they had to provide either 2 or 3 affidavits of some sort. The death record information was provided by the "informant", usually a spouse or child, so memory could be wrong there.

In checking Robert L. Parker's census tracking sheet, I have come to the conclusion that John Milas Parker was their son and probably a legitimate one.  Here is his census tracking sheet.

I do not find her in the 1910 census. She is buried in the Balsam Grove Cemetery with no dates. Her husband, Robert L. Parker, died in 1891.

Now, Robert L. Parker and Rebecca Brown married in 1878 and they had two children according to the 1880 census. Since the 1890 census burned, if he was their son he should appear in the 1900 census at about age 12 or 13 if born in 1887 per his birth record. Note Robert and Rebecca had three children born after 1880 census and before 1887, the last one in 1886. This makes a total of five children since their marriage per census records. They then had another child born in 1889.  Then note that Rebecca stated in 1900 census that she had given birth to 7 children and all 7 were still living. That accounts for only six children for her and Robert the last one born in 1889. However, Milas Parker, the mine hand, in the 1900 census taken on 15 Jun 1920, would account for the 7th child of theirs who is still living according to Rebecca.

Alfred Milas Parker who married Flora H. Coward

In October 2005, Naomi Hooper Green says, "My 77 year old sister called me this evening and talked an hour.
She says the Milas Parker who lived by Judaculla Rock was the Alfred Milas Parker who married Flora H. Coward. She remembered three of their children, Evelyn, Lois and J. B. Parker. J. B. married Marie somebody and their son, Jim Bob, lives there by Judaculla Rock and was a pharmacist in Waynesville.  She does not know if he is still working there or not. After J. B. died, Marie married a Leatherwood and still lives in Jackson County.
Evelyn married Charles McMahan and Lois married Tilman Bass, who was a taxi driver in Sylva."

Ms. Hooper Green adds, "My Aunt Fannie Hooper married John Green and they lived on the ALFRED Milas Parker place until sometime in late 1935 or 1936. They married in November 1931. I remember walking from Moses Creek and going to see them and finding the colored rings that Milas would put on his chicken legs and we would wear them for rings. We also picked up what we called "White" walnuts.
Aunt Fannie had a child born in April 1935 and he died Jul 1935 and he is buried in the Lower Coward Cemetery."
